My name is
Avril Maxey and I am a Counsellor completing my internship at Valley Connections
Counselling. I am in my final semester of my Masters of Arts in Counselling
Psychology at Yorkville University. I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in
Psychology in 2010 from Brock University and have worked in social services
for the past 8 years as a counsellor, advocate, and educator in
addictions recovery centres, elementary and high schools, group homes, women’s
shelters and in child protective services.
Through my experiences, I have gained valuable clinical skills working with children, adolescents, adults, and families. My work experience has included counselling and advocacy in sex work, addictions, anti-human-trafficking, mental health and intimate partner violence. I have cherished experience with many LGBTQ2 clients and understand the importance of gender identity and sexual orientation.
I thrive working from
a strengths-based approach to empower my clients! I understand that each person
needs a unique approach and finesse in order to be successful. I celebrate individuality
and believe in each and every one of my clients!
